Herbalism 101: Angelica Root

Angelica (Angelica archangelica) is a plant that has been revered for its powerful healing properties for centuries. Known for its tall stature, aromatic scent, and deep roots, this plant is a true ally for the herbalist seeking to support the body in profound ways. Both its roots and stems are used in various preparations to treat a wide range of ailments. From its rich history in indigenous cultures to its potent medicinal qualities, Angelica root stands as a guardian of well-being and vitality.

What Vitamins Are in Angelica Root?

Angelica contains important vitamins and minerals such as Vitamin B12 which plays a key role in nerve function and the production of red blood cells and Vitamin E an antioxidant that protects cells from oxidative stress.

Additionally, Angelica root offers calcium for bone health, magnesium for muscle relaxation and energy production, iron to prevent anemia and support red blood cell formation, and zinc, which is essential for immune function and wound healing.

How Does Angelica Support the Human Body?

One of the root’s primary actions is as a digestive tonic. It helps to stimulate appetite, ease digestive discomfort, and calm an unsettled stomach. This is especially useful for those who have a weakened digestive system or have lost their appetite due to illness or stress. Angelica root encourages healthy digestion by increasing the production of digestive enzymes and stomach acid, making it an effective remedy for indigestion, gas, and bloating.

Angelica root has a long history of use in supporting respiratory health. It acts as an expectorant, helping to clear mucus from the lungs and relieve congestion. For centuries, herbalists have relied on Angelica to treat colds, bronchitis, and even asthma. The warming nature of the root helps to break up mucus, making it easier to expel, while also soothing the respiratory tract.

Angelica has a special affinity for women’s reproductive health. It helps to regulate menstruation, relieve menstrual cramps, and balance hormonal fluctuations. It is often used in formulas for those experiencing irregular periods, amenorrhea, or menstrual discomfort. Its ability to improve circulation and stimulate blood flow makes it particularly useful for women who experience stagnation, coldness, or poor circulation in the lower abdomen.

In Traditional Chinese Medicine, Angelica root (Dang Gui) is regarded as one of the most important herbs for blood health, particularly in its ability to nourish, invigorate, and regulate blood flow. Additionally, Dang Gui is used for its pain-relieving properties, digestive support, and ability to moisten the intestines. Its versatility in Chinese medicine makes it a cornerstone of many classic herbal formulas designed to restore balance and vitality.

How to Prepare Angelica Root?

Angelica root can be consumed in various forms depending on the condition being treated. Each preparation method offers different strengths of its medicinal properties:

Tea/Infusion: This is a gentle way to consume Angelica root, especially for mild digestive or circulatory issues. To prepare an infusion, steep 1 teaspoon of dried root in a cup of hot water for 10-15 minutes, and drink 1-2 cups daily.

Decoction: For a stronger effect, particularly for blood-nourishing and pain-relieving purposes, a decoction can be made by simmering 1-2 teaspoons of dried root in water for 20-30 minutes. This method extracts more of the root’s active compounds and can be taken 1-2 times daily.

Tincture: A tincture, made by macerating the root in alcohol, is a potent way to take Angelica. A standard dose is 10-30 drops (approximately 0.5-1.5 mL) in water or juice, taken 1-3 times per day. This concentrated form is ideal for long-term use in supporting blood health or treating menstrual issues.

Capsules/Powder: Dried Angelica root can be taken in capsule or powdered form, typically at a dose of 1-2 grams per day, depending on the manufacturer’s recommendations.

Topical Application: Angelica root oil or infused oil is applied topically to relieve muscle aches, menstrual cramps, or joint pain. Its warming and circulatory-stimulating properties make it effective for topical use. Essential oils should always be diluted with a carrier oil (1-2% dilution) before applying to the skin.

Special note:

Always consult a healthcare professional before starting any new supplement, especially if you have underlying health conditions or are taking other medications. The versatility and health benefits of nettle make it an excellent addition to a healthy lifestyle.
